Exchange to Smartermail - Outlook connection

Just a general question, If I set up a user in Smartermail, same email address, same password etc then swap an on-prem exchange server to a Mapi enabled SM server, would Outlook pick up the account and reconnect, or would I have to re-add the email account / profile again?

It's the one thing I have not been able to try out during the trail. If it does, great, saves a lot of work and migration, if not, I have a long weekend coming up in Feb

More curious and part 'pre-planning'

Thanks
You have to re-create the MS Outlook profile.

Recreating the profile in Outlook is the safest route. Outlook is likely to struggle with swapping the servers, at least in part because of the way that Outlook handles autodiscover. Also adding to the difficult is the fact that all the IDs - from message and folder IDs to user and domain IDs, and even the server ID - would not match, which could cause all sorts of issues in Outlook, and possibly even in webmail.

By the way, I've gone ahead and updated the thread to be a question instead of a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I had a feeling this was going to be the case (but worth an ask) and my plan was to start the users on empty mailboxes and then export / import psts to fill them up once they were settled into the new server

@Andrew, I did select the 'I have a question' option when making the thread but it switched to a 'problem' tag. Thanks for updating and can be marked as answered
