SmarterMail Linux: Login without a domain
Problem reported by Martin Schaible - 9/20/2025 at 4:04 AM

On a test server with SmarterMail installed, I copied the settings.json and administrators.json files. But not the domains yet. then i restarted the service.

SmarterMail doesn't allow login because the main domain doesn't exist.

So, logging in as an administrator without domains isn't possible if the system is configured with a settings.json?

Thanks!

Martin

I'm guessing the settings.json is what's preventing the login. We'll do some testing, though. Thanks for pointing it out.

Hello! I just finished testing this, and was not able to replicate the issue. Here are the steps I've taken:
- Freshly installed SmarterMail 9392
- Stopped smartermail.service
- Removed the pre generated settings.json
- Copied settings.json and administrators.json from a Windows smartermail install into /etc/smartermail
- Started smartermail.service
I was able to log into the admin interface and get through migration (with it warning me about missing folders, since I had not copied domains over). What version of SmarterMail do you have installed on your Linux server?

Thanks for checking this issue. I also use build 9392.

Let me test this again in the next few days.
